
MCVL, U.S.A. — The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League today announced the hiring of Brian Hemelgarn as its Coordinator of Officials. Hemelgarn is well-known in the volleyball officiating world and is also the Coordinator of Officials for the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball League (NCAA Division I).
"Brian has an impressive reputation as an official, assignor, and clinician," said MCVL Commissioner Chuck Yrigoyen. "His involvement with the MIVA made him an excellent choice to take our officating program forward. We are grateful to Rose and Scott Atkinson for their service as MCVL officiating coordinators since our inception in 2014."
Hemelgarn has served as a USA Volleyball National referee for 25 years, FIVB International referee for 20 and FIVB challenge referee for three. He officiated several NORCECA Junior and Senior Continental championships, Pan American Cup, Pan American Games, World University Games and Olympic Qualification tournaments. He has been a men's collegiate and MIVA referee for over 20 years, including numerous MCVL assignment. Hemelgarn currently works with several NCAA Division I women's volleyball conferences and has worked on the national championship scene.
"I am honored for the opportunity to work with the MCVL in the role of coordinator of officials," said Hemelgarn. "The growth and expansion of NCAA Division III men's volleyball is exciting, and it is a privilege to be a part of it. I look forward to continuing the development of our cadre of referees and line judges with the goal of providing a consistent quality of officiating for MCVL competition."
In addition to his active officiating career, Hemelgarn is the Officials' Chair for the Ohio Valley Region for USA Volleyball, the PAVO representative for the USA Volleyball Rules Commission, and the coordinator for the USA Volleyball National Referee Certification and Evaluation program.
The MCVL consists of 10 NCAA Division III institutions — Adrian, Baldwin Wallace, Calvin, Mount St. Joseph, Mount Union, Olivet, Spalding, Trine, Wabash, and Wittenberg.
