Men's Volleyball Ousts Mount Saint Vincent

The Benedictine University men's volleyball team began the 2017 season with a four-set victory over College of Mount Saint Vincent in Union, NJ on Thursday afternoon.
 
THE RESULT
Benedictine 3, Mount Saint Vincent 1 (25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-15)
 
SET ONE
• With the score tied at 11, a kill from freshman Elijah Medlock gave Benedictine the lead and they never looked back for the 25-23 win
• The Eagles recorded 14 kills in the first set
 
SET TWO
• Trailing 5-7, BenU went on an 8-0 run on the serve of Medlock that included three kills from Zach Loeding
• Benedictine cruised to a 25-19 win, using 16 kills and an impressive .560 hitting percentage
 
SET THREE
• The Eagles took a 5-0 lead and looked like they would sail through set three until CMSV slowly chipped away at the lead late in the set
• Benedictine was up 23-20 until Mt. St. Vincent scored five straight points including two aces to secure the 25-23 win and force a fourth set
• Mt. St. Vincent out-hit the Eagles in the set, tallying 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage
 
SET FOUR
• Down early in the fourth set, Benedictine tied it at 12 after several CMSV errors
• The Eagles hit .312 and would only allow Mount Saint Vincent to score three more points for the 25-15 victory
 
STAT LEADERS
• Medlock led all players with 14 kills for a .500 hitting percentage and also recorded five block assists
• Sterling Glover tallied 11 kills and five digs while Jonathan Valentini had a team high seven digs
• Loeding recorded an impressive .583 hitting percentage with eight kills and also had seven block assists
• Freshman Nick Malak made his debut as an Eagle with seven kills, five block assists and two aces
• Setter Markus Riemer led the offense and tallied 37 assists and two aces
• As a team, Benedictine tallied 48 kills, a .343 hitting percentage, seven aces, 25 digs and 12.5 blocks

FROM THE COACH
"We started out a bit slow and CMSV put up a good fight," said head coach Dan Buehring. "We need to play a more aggressive game and be willing to take risks. Ultimately, this match was a great opportunity to learn and we're looking forward to working hard to play our best tomorrow."
