Eagles Fall to #10 Kean, Hunter

The Benedictine University men's volleyball team took #10 Kean University to five sets before falling to Hunter College in straight sets in Union, NJ on Saturday afternoon.

THE DETAILS
• Tied at eight in the first set, Kean pulled away after tallying 14 kills and a .722 hitting percentage – Kean only allowed Benedictine to score 16 points, seven of which were on service errors
• Benedictine took an early lead in the second set and went on a 3-0 run with two aces from Markus Riemer – Trailing 17-22, Kean went on a 5-1 run before two Nick Malak kills gave BenU the 25-23 win
• The Eagles offense caught fire in the third set as BenU tallied 16 kills, six each from Malak and Elijah Medlock – Benedictine never trailed in the set despite a Kean rally at the end
• Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth set, hitting under .200 – After trailing early in the set, the Eagles had a chance to tie it at 24 but lost the set on a service error – Both teams combined for a total of 39 service errors
• The Kean offense was unstoppable in the fifth set, tallying 12 kills for a .556 hitting percentage, but also had four service errors – With set point, a Zach Loeding kill tied it at 14 but Kean ended the match with back-to-back kills
 
THE STAT LEADERS
• Medlock once again led Benedictine with 17 kills (.368 hitting percentage) while Malak had 15 kills (.393 hitting percentage)
• Jonathan Valentini recorded 13 digs while Riemer had 39 assists and five digs
• As a team, BenU tallied 52 kills, four aces, 16 service errors, 38 digs and five blocks

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine trailed the entire first set and had five service errors – the Eagles came within one but the Hunter offense was too much
• The second set saw Hunter tally 15 kills and led by as many as nine for the 25-17 win
• With the score tied at 15, Hunter went on a 5-0 run that included three BenU hitting errors in the third set – the Eagles only recorded nine kills with just as many errors
 
THE STAT LEADERS
• Medlock had nine kills while Sterling Glover recorded eight kills and four digs
• Joe Lock had 15 assists
• As a team, the Eagles had 32 kills, 23 digs and four blocks

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Medlock was named to the All-Tournament Team

Benedictine men's volleyball, now 1-2 overall, play their final match on the east coast when they travel to take on #14 New York University at 10:30am CST on Saturday.
