Shaking off the Rust

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- In their first match in over two weeks, the Sabercats were no match for the Loras College Duhawks.

Loras picked up their second straight-set win over Maranatha this season, as the Iowans have won eight of their last 10 matches.

  • Result: Maranatha 0-3 Loras (18-25, 14-25, 14-25)
  • Venue: Athletic Center
  • Location: Dubuque, Iowa
  • Attendance: 201
  • Records: Maranatha (1-24), Loras (19-6)

Maranatha put in a strong fight in the opening set, falling by just seven points to the powerful Duhawks. Maranatha's defense kept the set close early on, but a 7-0 Duhawk run took the wind out of the sails for MBU in the middle of the set. Late kills from Rory MasseyIsaac McKeeTaylor Dafoe, and Derek Wallis kept the Sabercats alive, but the Duhawks eventually closed it out to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set had a similar story, and MBU took the lead out of the gate, but another mid-set run (8-0 this time) from Loras was a blow that the Sabercats never fully recovered from. Three aces in that 8-0 run kept the momentum in favor of the hosts, who were looking sharp heading into the third set.

The win came soon enough for Loras, who led wire-to-wire in the final frame. The Sabercats stuck with it as they always do, but they could not threaten the Duhawks, who have made winning matches a habit in recent weeks. The third set had the same score as the second, and the Duhawks had their second win of the season over MBU.
