UOlivet defeated by Aquinas in four sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Olivet men's volleyball team was defeated by Aquinas College in four sets tonight at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. After the Saints won the first set, the Comets came back to win the second set. Aquinas won the match with wins in the third and fourth sets.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Aquinas defeated Olivet 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first set, Olivet seized a two-point lead, 8-6. The Saints countered with a 5-1 run to take their own two-point lead, 11-9. Aquinas stretched its advantage to three points, 17-14. The Comets responded with four straight points to go ahead, 18-17. The Saints closed the set with an 8-3 spurt to win it by a 25-21 score.
- Early in the second set, Olivet was able to lead by four points on two occasions. Aquinas chipped away at its deficit and eventually took a 14-13 lead. Three Saint errors handed the lead back to the Comets. Aquinas was able to tie the score but never able to get the lead back, as Olivet went on to win the set, 25-23.
- The third set saw the Comets go up by three points, 9-6. The Saints battled back with an 8-2 run for a three-point cushion, 14-11. Olivet used a 5-1 run to regain the lead. Six straight Aquinas points made the score, 21-16. Four consecutive Comet points closed the gap to a single point before the Saints ended the set with a 4-0 burst to win the set, 25-20.
- Aquinas held a wire-to-wire lead in the fourth set.
FOR THE COMETS
- Freshman Silas Martin slammed down a match-high 18 kills.
- Sophomore Andy Hok was next with 10 kills and hit at a .318 clip.
- Sophomore Amarion Lawson recorded nine kills.
- Senior Will Mensching finished with team-highs in set assists (35) and digs (eight).
UP NEXT
- Olivet welcomes Calvin University and Illinois Institute of Technology to the Cutler Event Center Saturday for a triangular. The Comets face Calvin at 12 p.m., followed by the Knights vs. Scarlet Hawks, and the day ends with Olivet battling Illinois Tech.
