Men's volleyball earns third place in inaugural NCCAA invitational

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - The men's volleyball team ended in third place at the first NCCAA national invitational with a 1-1 record on the second day of the competition.

The Panthers faced Ottawa (Ariz.) in the final match of pool play in the morning and were topped in three sets.  Ottawa took the match 25-14, 25-14, 25-22.

Kyle Ward had 11 kills against Ottawa to hold the team-high in points.

The Panthers hit their best in the final set with 12 kills and three errors in 30 attacks to record a hitting percentage of .300.

George Black was Greenville's leader in digs with six in the match, and Tanner Smith provided 28 set assists.

The loss to Ottawa gave the Panthers a match with the host Trinity Christian in the third place match.  Greenville swept Trinity Christian in a 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 win.

Black provided a large share of Greenville's offense with 14 kills and three block assists to end with 15.5 points.

Ryan Nelson gave the Panthers six digs, and Isaiah Canales tallied five block assists.

Smith led Greenville with 34 assists.

GU improved their hitting percentage in each set, starting with .069 in the first and moving above .300 in the final two sets.  Greenville topped out with a hitting rate of .393 in the final set.

The Panthers (4-3) host Lincoln on Tuesday at 5 and 7 p.m. in their first home matches of the season at H.J. Long Gymnasium
