Trine Falls Just Short of Major NCAA Upset at Loras

Dubuque, Iowa — Carrying the MCVL banner to this year's NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championshiop, the Trine Thunder took 5th-ranked-nationally Loras to five sets before falling, 16-14, in the decisive set. The loss ended a tremendous season for Trine, which finished at 19-7 overall. The Thunder tied for second in the MCVL's regular-season standings before winning the league tournament on April 13.

MCVL Offensive Player of the Year Ted Hofmeister led Trine with 18 kills. He had a .333 hitting percentage as did teammate Kevin Boncaro, who had 17 kills and a team-high four service aces. Matt Stillman also had an outstanding match with a team-best .750 hitting percentage on 15 kills and zero errors. MCVL Defensive Player of the Year Hunter Haas had 16 digs with Boncaro just behind with 12.

The Duhawks were paced by Corey Mayotte's 33 kills and Dorian Fiorenza's 18. Setter Joe Horn had 60 assists and shared the team lead with 13 digs. Loras, which will host the national semifinals and final April 26 and 28, lost the regional final to 4th-ranked Cal Lutheran, 3-2. Loras came back from losing the first two sets but lost, 15-13, in set five.

The league now looks ahead to the weekend of February 21, 2025, when the new season of MCVL volleyball starts off with a full slate of matches.
