Men's Volleyball sweeps Wabash to improve to 2-0 in conference play

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — The Wittenberg men's volleyball team swept Wabash in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League game on Sunday, winning the three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-21. This was the Tigers' third straight 3-0 victory and ninth win in their past 11 games.

Stat Leaders

  • Sophomores Eli Halverson (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) and Michael Yurk (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) led Wittenberg with nine kills each. Yurk hit .533 in the game, and Halverson hit .467.
  • Senior Andrew Diaz de Padilla (Nipmo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) and sophomore Sam Richardson (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) led the Tigers with 14 assists each.
  • Yurk and sophomore Jake Downs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Milford) led Wittenberg in digs with six each.
  • Ricky Sessions and Bawibawi Thang led Wabash with eight kills each.

The Game

  • Wabash opened up a 4-1 lead in the first set, but the Tigers came back to tie the score at 4-all.
  • With the score tied 8-8, the Tigers put together a 9-3 run that included two kills from Halverson and an ace from Diaz de Padilla to go up 17-11 en route to the 25-18 victory.
  • Wittenberg built a 14-4 lead to open the second set. That run was capped by a kill from Yurk followed by an ace from senior Tom Supan (Medina, Ohio/Medina).
  • The Tigers later increased their lead to 21-9 with a run capped by an ace from Richardson en route to the 25-13 win.
  • Wittenberg once again jumped out to a lead in the third set, taking a 15-10 edge midway through. Wabash fought back to within one, 19-18, but the Tigers closed on a 6-3 run capped by a kill from Yurk to secure the victory.
  • Wittenberg hit .485 in the game, finishing with 37 kills and just four errors. Wabash hit .138, finishing with 28 kills and 17 errors.

  • Wittenberg is now 5-3 all-time against Wabash.
  • Third-year head coach Nathan Matthews is now 40-34 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Diaz de Padilla has 439 assists this season and ranks third in program history with 1,049 career assists. His 610 assists from last season rank seventh in program history for a single season.
  • Yurk has 209 kills this season and ranks eighth in program history with 402 career kills. He currently ranks 10th in program history for single-season kills.
  • Supan has 352 career kills, which is 16 shy of 10th all-time at Wittenberg. His 254 career digs rank ninth in program history in that category, and his 219 kills from last season rank ninth in program history for single-season kills.
