Calvin University to Become MCVL's Tenth Member in 2024

MCVL, U.S.A. -- The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League today announced the addition of Calvin University for the 2024 season. The Knights will become the league's 10th member institution.

"We are extremely excited to be joining the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League," said Calvin Director of Athletics Jim Timmer. "We feel it is one of the top Division III men's volleyball leagues in the country and we are honored to be a part of it. We are grateful to the institutions and to the league office for accepting Calvin University as a new member."

Calvin announced the addition of men's volleyball on October 28, 2022. On January 4, 2023, the school named Spencer Fredrick as the program's first head coach. Calvin, which has its multi-sport affiliation in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, will join fellow MIAA institutions Adrian College, Olivet College, and Trine University in the single-sport MCVL. The Knights have a rich tradition in women's volleyball, winning three NCAA Division III championships and appearing in another three NCAA finals over the last 13 years.

"The quality of play in the MCVL continues to get better and better since our inaugural season in 2015," said Chuck Yrigoyen, MCVL Commissioner. "Calvin's membership strengthens our league and provides potential NCAA tournament access to another group of student-athletes through our DIII championship automatic qualification." The MCVL tournament champion, which this year will be decided April 14 and 15 at the site of the league's top seed (TBD), has a reserved seat at the 2023 NCAA tournament table.

The league unanimously approved Calvin's membership application and, simultaneously, approved a two-year moratorium on new members. Barring any departures, MCVL membership will be set at 10 schools for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Those 10 institutions are Adrian, Baldwin Wallace, Fontbonne, Mount St. Joseph, Mount Union, Olivet, Trine, Wabash, and Wittenberg.
